11.04 Oneiric – Firefox Beta 8.0~b4 – Sound problem with Movie Player caused by npviewer.bin

leave a comment »

I was experiencing issues when playing video with Movie Player and mplayer.

I initially thought it was caused by pulseaudio but traced it down to Firefox and npviewer.bin usage.

If I kill npviewer.bin the sound works.

Will look for a bug to report it under.

Upgrading to Oneiric 11.10 Beta 1 – Dealing with Zeitgeist (zeitgeist kills kittens as well)

leave a comment »

Uninstalling Zeitgeist can cause issues as it is used by Unity and expected to be available. Removal could be a problem in the future as other programs may look for it being installed.

There are also privacy concerns, see zeitgeist kills kittens as well.

But there is a simple solution:

  1. Remove the old databases and use the “–replace” argument to generate new files.
  2. Then change permissions so no one can read or write to them. :-)

________________________________________

# Delete previous logging.
rm ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite
zeitgeist-daemon --replace

here.

# Render Zeitgeist illiterate - cannot read or write
chmod -rw ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite*

here.

Note: In place of the rm command I navigated to the folder and deleted everything manually.

Upgrading to Oneiric 11.10 Beta 1 – Zeitgeist logs the user’s activities and events – files opened, websites visited, conversations held with other people, etc

with 2 comments

Zeitgeist is a service which logs the user’s activities and events (files
opened, websites visited, conversations held with other people, etc.) and
makes the relevant information available to other applications.

These guys look like OK ppl so why are they doing something like this without express user consent?

If you know what Zeitgeist is and you turn it on to monitor what you do then Zeitgeist is great.

But if you don’t know what it is and what it does, and you haven’t been asked to opt-in… is that not a breach of your right to privacy?

________________________________________

The more I look into this the more concerned I become.

I think the least we need is a pop up explaining the implications of Zeitgeist and allowing you to configure it.

________________________________________

This looks like it will do the job:

# Delete previous logging.
rm ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite
zeitgeist-daemon --replace

here.

# Render Zeitgeist illiterate - cannot read or write
chmod -rw ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite*

here.

Then cd to the dl folder and do this:

sudo dpkg -i zeitgeist-extension-fts_0.0.7-0ubuntu2_all.deb

See here.

Note: to stop the 100% CPU thing while you install this do:

Oneiric 11.10 – No detail view on the file manager Nautilus? Use Thunar.

leave a comment »

Use Alt + F2 and type in:

gksu nautilus

Then you get to use the adult version and use can select  a view “compact” and add extra columns etc..

But… it does not look as if these setting are saved, which is annoying.

Plan B

Use Thunar, install via the software Centre and it will ask if you want a launcher created.

Also install the thunar-archive-plugin (an Archive plugin for Thunar file manager).

Or PCManFM which is very nice and simple, and no bloody breadcrumbs!

Ooh it also has a root mode built-in nice :-)

Ubuntu 11.10 will Provide Post Release Updates for ATI and Nvidia Proprietory Drivers

with 2 comments

Interesting – searched for this after seeing as an option in Alternative drivers via Ubuntu control centre.

Tried it and it works for me ;-)

Updates to the proprietary AMD Catalyst and NVIDIA drivers post-release will finally be available! No longer will you be bound to the latest NVIDIA / AMD driver release at the time of the distribution’s release. Canonical is looking to provide optional packages via Jockey that user’s can opt-in to using that would enable using the latest monthly / stable blobs. This though isn’t for open-source driver users since those are harder to update in a sane manner, but there is also xorg-edgers for that as well.

here and here.

Upgrading to Oneiric 11.10 Beta 1 – Snagging List

leave a comment »

Any other issues I am adding here:

  1. My Nautilus Launcher from the dock doesn’t work. Starting it from from the desktop or terminal does work though.
Needs to be added back in to the launcher each reboot.
  2. Nvidia Settings Launcher missing from dock. I used dash to open it and added it back in.
  3. How do you configure the Radiance Theme?
Unselecting and reselecting the Radiance Theme gave me the lighter title bars that I was looking for.
  4. No detail view on the file manager nautilus? See here.
  5. Pastie broke so I installed ClipIt, looking good so far.
Oh and that is the first time I have used the Software Centre and it gets points for creating a launcher.
  6. Virtualbox is still working OK the package Manager is saying it is still Natty.
  7. Zeitgeist takes 100% CPU on one core. See here.
  8. Zeitgeist is watching you… privacy fix? See here.

That’s it so far not too bad for a beta1 :-)

Upgrading to Oneiric 11.10 Beta 1 – propritary Nvidia drivers

with 3 comments

nvidia drivers, second monitor covered by black (Bug #813343 )

This was a little tricky.

I have a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS; 1 x Samsung SM226BW (left 1680x 1050); 1 x SMB2430H (right 1920x 1080.).

I was using TwinView via NVIDIA Settings in Natty 11.04 OK prior to the upgrade.

Update : 02.09.2011

I find that to have TwinView work correctly across both screens I need to do this:

The NVIDIA Settings Screen Dance

Enable TwinView, apply and click OK on the invisible dialogue box.

Set Clone and Apply then Cancel.

Note: Both screens now are enabled (but both showing the same view).

Move the right screen to the left or vice versa and apply.

Note: Both screen now allow windows to be moved from one to another.

Move the right screen back to the left and apply.

All working correctly now :-)

Oh and you may want to have a look at this.

Update : 08.09.2011

The latest update has fixed this issue, NVIDIA Settings with TwinView now works fine. :-)

Update : 10.09.2011

Tested again, NVIDIA Settings with TwinView still need to do the The NVIDIA Settings Screen Dance :-(

Upgrading to Oneiric 11.10 Beta 1 _now_ :-)

I am Upgrading to the Oneiric 11.10 Beta 1 _now_

See you on the other side :-)

Alt+F2 key combination and typed in:

update-manager -d

Downloaded almost all of the file but then I received:

Could not download the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Please check your Internet connection or installation media and try again. All files downloaded so far have been kept.

So after searching I took advice and changed my Ubuntu server to the Main Server:

First switch from the regional server (US, UK, Swiss, etc…) to the Main Server using the Software Sources window

You can open up the Software Sources window by running the Update Manager (System > Administration > Update Manager), clicking on the Settings button at the lower-left corner of the window, and entering your password if prompted to do so.

PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure

That did the trick :-D

Currently Installing the Upgrades.
